During the singing of "Happy Birthday" at Hannah's 4th birthday party, the blowing of the candles turned out to be TOO exciting!!
This video shows the first 10 minutes of Hannah's fourth birthday. At 7am, Hannah follows clues to find her present.
This holiday weekend Katie and I had a full three day weekend and made the most of it. E91 closed all children's programming because of the Indy 500! We only had 50-60% attendance. We borrowed the Coster's pop-up camper and used my new Isuzu Rodeo to pull it to a private campground in Southeastern Ohio. Hannah walked the almost 3 miles of our hike to a waterfall deep in the woods. As you can see and hear, Hannah had a great time. On Sunday we drove to Columbus to spend time with the Ohio Gerbers, including some of Hannah's cousins! -I'll post some more photos tomorrow.

Thanks to Joe and Helen Bouterse, Hannah started a new swim class at the Y last week. This year she goes in the pool with a teacher, a couple other kids, AND NOT US! Katie and I were a little nervous about that fact and wondered if she would do it without us and whether a teacher could handle having kids this small that can't swim. Well, the teacher's name is Allison and she does a wonderful job with the kids!
If you didn't know, Katie was speaking this week at a convention at a Disney Resort. Hannah and I tagged along and we all had one day to "Do Disney"! Katie did tons of research on how to plan your trip and had an ambitious itinerary for our one day. We started at Magic Kingdom, went to Epcot, then to Animal Kingdom, and then back to Magic Kingdom before collapsing in our hotel room. The day turned out perfect, from short lines to just the right bus showing up when we needed it. Thank you to those of you that made it possible!
One day last week Katie left for a meeting or something and Hannah and Daddy had a great time playing with the special effects on the camera on my laptop. Hannah really got into moving her face around to get new and sillier images!Labels: Hannah
This is priceless. If you don't already know, Hannah is a big fan of Sesame Street! Thanks to Uncle Joe for recording, spinning, and sending me this video.
OK our little summer sabbatical from the Gerber Family Blog is over. We promise to get back into the practice of updating regularly. I've compiled a slideshow video to show off the highlights of our summer. It's big (2 minutes and 3.3MB) so it may take a little to load. It takes you through Katie's "Crossing" event for graduating 6th graders, to zoo trips, to baseball games, to family vacations with both the Shuttleworths and the Gerbers, to Sesame Place theme park and ending up at the Indiana State Fair.
Sorry for the delay, but last week Hannah turned 2! In the morning we woke Hannah up with a candle topped cupcake. As you can seeshe went to town on the icing! Katie and I got her a Sesame Street MagnaDoodle. She loved it!
For Hannah's birthday Uncle Joe and Aunt Helen got Hannah 7 weeks of swimming lessons at the YMCA. Yesterday was her first swimming lesson. Many people have asked, how exactly do they teach a 2 year old (close to it) how to swim. Well, for her first lesson she learned how to blow bubbles, kick (by mommy saying kick and moving her feet back and forth), jump in the water (by singing humpty dumpty sat on the wall), we threw little ducks and had to kick to go get them, we sang if your happy and you know it splash your hands, kick your feet, make it rain, and a few other swimming songs that we need to learn how to sing. In only a 1/2 hour we actually did a whole lot. Next week daddy gets to go in the water with her, mommy and daddy are going to alternate who gets to participate in the swimming lesson. Just wait until this summer and Hannah can show off her swimming skills.
I was looking through the video tapes of the wedding and found this quick clip of Hannah in her dress and holding her flowers. I thought some of you might like to see her. Sorry, it's really quick!
Pat had Good Friday off work and after pulling all sort of muscles helping a friend move into his first house, we decided to take Hannah to the Children's Museum. Well, so did everyone else. It was pretty crowded, but we still had a good time. Here Hannah is dancing in front of the big TV in the Clifford (The Big Red Dog) exhibit. I think she gets her rythm from her mom! :)

I've been running behind on posting these videos. I've already heard from several of you that you've enjoyed these videos this week. This video is Hannah deciding to get on Libby like she was riding her. Again, she just did this on her own.

Today's video comes from when Katie asked Hannah if she wanted a tubby. She may still have few words, but she very cleary communicates!

Hannah started putting on a song and dance tonight. Here's video number 2 for international video blogging week. If you listen closely, we think it was "Ring around the Rosie".

OK, here it is, the first video of vlogging week! Tonight Hannah started trying a head stand and looking back through her legs. We have no idea why, but it was cute!

This weekend was a very BIG weekend for Katie's family. Katie's brother, Dave, married long time girlfriend, Kari, on Saturday in Fort Recovery, Ohio. (In truth she's been a part of the family for years now. :) The ceremony was in Kari's small country Catholic church, but the reception was a huge party in town. The photo above is from the rehearsal. Hannah was a flower girl and did pretty well walking down the first half of the aisle! She was coming off a week of being sick and then straight into a wild weekend. Below is a photo of her holding her Papa's hand while leaving the rehearsal. We'll post some more this week once we get it all organized.
Friday after work we took Hannah to get her first haircut! They asked her what DVD she wanted to watch and then took her to sit in a race car and watch the DVD while the lady cut her hair. She only got her bangs trimmed and an inch and a half around the back and sides. She was really good until the lady had the gall to get in the way of Elmo's World just to trim her bangs! Imagine!

The Gerbers have enjoyed another Merry Christmas with the Shuttleworths. This year was a little different than years past. First of all because Hannah is more and more fun opening up presents. Secondly because Katie and I had to leave Ohio and run back for church on Christmas Eve. And thirdly because Katie's grandma was scheduled to have surgery right after Christmas. She came through the surgery Wednesday really well and is recovering with family at her side. We've been bad, very, very bad bloggers. I'm going to try to make up for it now. Let's start with Hannah's Lion Halloween costume.

Here's Hannah's 18 month portrait. We took her to the park on a Saturday afternoon in October and took some pictures in the leaves. If you would like a print of this picture, just email me and tell me the closest Walmart or Walgreens that you'd like to pick it up at. I'll go on line and send it to your local store and you can pick it up for free.Labels: Hannah
Hannah's has just been a ton of fun lately. She has so much personality coming out now. But perhaps my most proud Dad moment happened this Monday night. We needed to pick up a small accessory at the Apple Store. While Katie payed for it Hannah and I played a Dora game on an iMac in the children's section. When we were ready to leave, we handed the small Apple bag to Hannah. Hannah put the straps over her arm like a purse and paraded out of the store. It was absolutely adorable and everyone in the store that saw her stopped and watched her. She made quite a scene.

Hannah's learning to play games and sing songs. It's so fun! I thought I'd start the week off right with two Hannah videos today. In this one Hannah's playing Ring Around the Rosie with Mommy.
An elder at church that volunteers with Katie won this Retro Rocket toy and gave it to Hannah awhile back. We just got it out and she loves to make it blast off.Labels: Hannah
Katie dropped Hannah off at a babysitter so she could get her hair done. The babysitter decided that Hannah needed to get her hair done too. Here are my beautiful girls!Labels: Hannah
Last weekend we celebrated both Katie and her Dad's birthdays with the Shuttleworths. Here Hannah is trying on her new hat.
Hannah is learning to like the outdoors. She cries whenever you put her down in the grass. It will be a long summer, so we're working on that. I had hoped to get a great portrait out back, but the only time she stopped crying was when she was distracted by Libby. This image also illustrates that Hannah and Libby are growing in their friendship lately too now that Hannah is walking.Labels: Hannah
Katie and I have had a chance to reflect on the enormous change that's happened in the last year, namely Hannah. Believe it or not next week Hannah turns 1 year old! We've been preparing all week for her birthday party this weekend with family in Ohio. Have a great weekend!

Yes, it has finally happened. Hannah is walking. She is so much fun to watch as she toddles around falls, picks herself up and continues on her way. We will post video soon, but I wanted to get the word out. Her first birthday is happening soon and I am so excited. I have decided that I am going to make her first birthday cake and decorate it. So, we will see how it goes :) Don't worry, we will post pictures no matter what it looks like.

Hannah's personality has really come out this week. If this week is any indication, she will be a lot of fun, but a stinker!

Well, what started out as a normal Thursday turned into a wild night-weekend. Hannah had a fever of 103.7, she felt so hot to the touch, like you could fry an egg on her. We called our Dr. at 11:00 p.m. (actually our Dr.'s on call service). They told us to take her to the ER. So I'm crying, Pat is calm, we both are praying and come to find out she has an ear infection in her right ear. We didn't get home until 1:30 a.m. We were already planning on heading to Columbus, OH, to see Nana and Papa. The Dr. said that would be fine. Let's just put it this way, that was the longest trip to OH, we have ever had. Nana took Hannah from us as soon as we got in the door and cuddled her so Pat and I could get a breather. (Thanks, Nana) We decided to stay for the entire weekend. I am calling Brandon (my co-leader in the Preteen Ministry) to see if he would cover for me. Of course he said yes, because that's the good guy Brandon is. Pat and I had only packed one nights clothing. (Normally I pack extra of everything, but the one time I don't is the time when we needed it.) So that meant, a SHOPPING TRIP:) Pat and I go to church in our new duds. (Don't worry, I always pack extra for Hannah so she was good to go.) We, needed to go back home by the way of the Fort, because we left a bag there last week and needed it. So we get to the Fort and there are Tornado warnings, thunderstorms all around. So being the spontaneous couple that we are.....Spent the night. To bad Indiana just joined the rest of the world in the time change, it would have been to our benefit this weekend. But alas, we made it home, Hannah is recovering, I got a little vacation, and now it is time to do laundry.

Hannah has her first ear infection. Unfortunately her first symptom came at 11pm last night with a 103.7 fever. Our doctor said to take her to the emergency room. At the hospital, the fever went up to 103.9. They were stumped because she had no other symptoms until the doctor looked in her right ear. "There it is." We got antibiotics and got back home around 1:30am. Hannah's fever broke this morning and she spent most of today sleeping on mommy. She's acting better now so we're off to Nana and Papa's house for an overnight visit.

I'll have Katie rewrite this because she was there, but Monday Hannah decided this early spring weather was too much for her and preceded to get her arms through the neck of her shirt and pull her shirt off of her. This is something we'll have to put a stop to before too long, but for now it's pretty funny!

Katie had a important all-day camp meeting and so Mr. Mom took Hannah to the sitters in the Amigo!

This past weekend was our Incredible Love event for the preteen ministry. We served a brunch to around 100 Seniors 55 and over. We had a great time, but are a little tired. Hannah stayed with Uncle Joe & Aunt Helen for Friday evening, & Saturday morning. Pat picked up Hannah Friday night and brought her back to the church. She slept all through the night in her pack-n-play. I can't believe she slept through all those noisy 5th & 6th graders. I can't help thinking this is the first of many overnighters to come. Uncle Joe took a very cute picture of her in her new little vest that was given to us by the Lingle family and we wanted to share it with you.

Yes, Hannah has a very sharp point coming from her lower gums. It just appeared last night and it is still here this morning. We would send a picture but it is very difficult to get inside her mouth right now :) It will be so much fun to see how Hannah looks with teeth.

(Click on the image to view the video.)Well dah, you're probably thinking. I've been saying since Hannah was born that I don't think I'll completely feel like a dad until she starts calling me dad or daddy. Now some of you are thinking, I've heard her say Da da da da da for several minutes at a time. Yes, but let's be honest, she's not calling for me.
However, this morning things changed. We were doing a little extra playing and giggling before work. I brought her back to the living room where Katie was and got my coat, keys, etc. to leave. When I shut the toddler gate behind me to leave, Hannah started bawling, crawled to the other side of the gate, pulled herself up, and looked up at me through crocodile tears and the bars of the gate. She was actually hurt that I was leaving, which actually hurt me too. Now, Katie gets this often in her role as Mommy, but this was a huge moment for me. Painful, yet priceless.Labels: Hannah

Well, Hannah had a fever for 3 days straight. So we decided we should go see the Doctor. (Thanks to the advice of mom and Wendy, Pat's sister). The Doctor said she basically has a really bad cold and gave her some medicine to take away the stuffy nose.

Well, these past couple of days have been a new experience for us as parents. What do you do when your child is sick? Do you call the Doctor? When should you give her medication? The answer to all of these things is relax and read all you can in our wonderful baby books and if you are worried call the Doctor, that is what they are there for. Hannah had a little fever of 100.8, and just wanted to cuddle (which is just fine with Pat and I). We gave her some medication and the fever has gone down now. In the process we have discovered some white bumps on her gums. Yes, I believe Hannah is cutting teeth. So maybe the next time a few of you see her she will have toothies (Grandma taught me that word)!

Hannah is beginning to LOVE bath time. She is playing with toys, kicks, splashes, and laughs with joy as she is getting bathed. Mommy and Daddy have so much fun watching her. Mommy is going to have to give her more time to play in the bath tub, no more short baths for Hannah. Well, maybe a few when we need to go someplace early in the morning:)

Pat, Hannah, and I are wrapping up our 10 day Christmas Vacation. What a joy it has been seeing family and friends and watching Hannah react to her little cousins. We are enjoying a day of rest at dad and moms place right now. Today has been precious for Pat and I watching and playing with Hannah. I think she is changing and growing everyday and we don't want to miss one minute of it. We will be heading back to Indy tomorrow full of wonderful memories and pictures that captured our time together.

Tonight Hannah is experimenting with standing! She can now pull herself up to her knees routinely and tonight to her feet! At one point, she was sitting and standing up on her knees not touching anything! This is exciting stuff! BTW, she is still leaning on me in the picture. She hasn't stood on her own yet. Let's hope that doesn't come for a while!Labels: Hannah
I now have come to understand why being a stay at home mom takes a ton of energy. Chasing a 7 month old around as she gets into wall plugs, bathroom trashcans (that was totally gross), discovers the air vent that hasn't been dusted in a while, gets into DVD'S, goes for the stereo system, loves the computer cord and will go for any shoe string in sight. I would say that I move her from one thing or another about an average of once every 15 minutes. However, I LOVE it. Sure there are days when all you want to do is go out and get away by yourself for a day (which I get to do thanks to wonderful family and friends). I have found out that getting away is very important and makes you a better mother, thanks for the advice of my wonderful mother. Hearing her laugh, saying dadadada, little pouting cries, our cuddle time, watching her discover something new makes being a new mother the best thing in the world.Labels: Hannah
